Hypokalaemia: an independent risk factor of enterobacteriaceae peritonitis in CAPD patients - Ya-Wen Chuang, Kuo-Hsiung Shu, Tung-Min Yu, Chi-Hung Cheng, and Cheng-Hsu Chen

Link to abstract.  Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation - 24:5:1603-1608 - May 2009
CAPD patients with hypokalaemia are associated with a higher prevalence of peritonitis and poor nutritional status. Enterobacteriaceae were the predominant organisms causing peritonitis in the group with hypokalaemia. This unique and novel finding implies the translocation of these organisms from intestinal mucosa into the peritoneal cavity. A pathogenic mechanism linking malnutrition and hypokalaemia is also proposed.

A new central venous catheter cap: decreased microbial growth and risk for catheter-related bloodstream infection - A.L. Buchman, J. Spapperi, P. Leopold

Link to abstract.  Journal of Vascular Access - 10:1:11-21 - January-March 2009
An antimicrobial catheter cap is not a complete substitute for a proper catheter cleaning technique and other anti-infection precautions. However, we describe a unique catheter cap that significantly decreased the likelihood of a catheter-related infection from a non cleaned cap in an in vitro model.

Intestinal bacterial overgrowth in CAPD patients with hypokalaemia - Kuo-Hsiung Shu, Chi-Sen Chang, Ya-Wen Chuang, Cheng-Hsu Chen, Chi-Hung Cheng, Ming-Ju Wu, and Tung-Min Yu

Link to abstract.  Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation - 24:4:1289-1292 - April 2009
CAPD patients with hypokalaemia may have intestinal bacterial overgrowth. While both DM and hypokalaemia might contribute to this abnormality, only DM appeared to be the independent risk factor.

Does bacteriuria interfere with albuminuria measurements of patients with diabetes? - Caroline K. Kramer, Joíza Camargo, Eliza D. Ricardo, Fernando K. Almeida, Luís H. Canani, Jorge L. Gross, and Mirela J. Azevedo

Link to abstract.  Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation - 24:4:1193-1196 - April 2009
The presence of bacteriuria does not interfere significantly with urinary albumin measurements and its exclusion is not necessary to diagnose DN.
