Impact of hemodialysis therapy on hepatitis C virus infection: A deeper insight - F. Fabrizi, P. Messa, P. Martin

The mechanisms by which the HD procedure lowers HCV viremia remain largely speculative: the passage of viral particles into the dialysate, the trapping of the virus on the surface of the dialyzer membrane, and an indirect host-mediated mechanism have been cited. The latter hypothesis implicates the production of interferon-α, hepatocyte growth factor, or other cytokines provided with antiviral activities during the hemodialysis sessions. Clinical trials aimed at clarifying this issue are under way.

Malnutrition–Inflammation Complex Syndrome and Hepatitis C in Maintenance Hemodialysis Patients - Vlastimir Vlatkovic, Jasna Trbojevic-Stankovic, Biljana Stojimirovic

Link to abstract.  Therapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis - 13:2:113-120 - April 2009
MICS had a prevalence of 20–40% in our study. HCV-positive patients had a significantly higher prevalence of MICS than HCV-negative patients (30–40% vs. 20–30%).

Quality of life is not related with liver disease severity but with anemia, malnutrition, and depression in HCV-infected hemodialysis patients - Baris AFSAR, Nurhan Fatma OZDEMIR, Siren SEZER, Mehmet HABERAL

None of the SF-36 scores differed between Child-Pugh A and B patients. Instead, most of the SF-36 subscale and summary scores were related with hemoglobin, albumin, MIS and Beck Depression Score. Quality of life in HCV-infected HD patients was independent of liver disease severity anchors, but was correlated with anemia, malnutrition, and depression.

Reduction of Hepatitis C Virus Using Lectin Affinity Plasmapheresis in Dialysis Patients - Richard H. Tullis, R. Paul Duffin, Harold H. Handley, Puneet Sodhi, Jeevan Menon, James A. Joyce, Vijay Kher

Link to abstract.  Blood Purification - 27:1:64-69 - January 2009
The Hemopurifier rapidly cleared HCV from blood treated in vitro. In patients, the combination of the Hemopurifier plus dialysis decreased HCV viral load by 57% in 1 week. Moreover, viral load reduction continued up to 7 days after treatment.

Therapeutic Aspects of Hepatitis C in Hemodialysis Patients - Seyed Mohammadmehdi Hosseini Moghaddam, Seyed Moayed Alavian, Mohammad Rahnavardi

Link to abstract.  American Journal of Nephrology - 29:2:129-128 - January 2009
Although both conventional IFN and PEG-IFN seem to be favorable options for the management of hepatitis C in HD patients, further studies on new therapeutic agents are required.
