Characteristics of dialysis-related amyloidosis in patients on haemodialysis therapy for more than 30 years - Shigeru Otsubo, Naoki Kimata, Ichiro Okutsu, Kazunori Oshikawa, Syuitsu Ueda, Hisayuki Sugimoto, Michihiro Mitobe, Keiko Uchida, Kimiko Otsubo, Kosaku Nitta, and Takashi Akiba

Haemodialysis-associated amyloidosis was common in extremely long-term survivors. Even though the mean age at the start of haemodialysis was younger in the ‘30+’ group than in the ‘20–30’ group, the frequency of operations for CTS did not differ. This may be attributable to the recent advances in haemodialysis technologies.

MAHD may become an efficient modality for the prevention of dialysis-related amyloidosis because β2-m concentrations ranging from mild to severe conditions can be adequately handled.

Our data suggest that when patients who have sufficient urine output are given twice-weekly HD, they maintain dialysis adequacy and exhibit better preservation of RRF than patients on thrice-weekly HD.

A Circulating 2-Microglobulin Intermediate in Hemodialysis Patients - Yoshinori Uji, Yoshihiro Motomiya, Yukio Ando

This study demonstrated that two or three conformational isomers of 2m were probably ubiquitously recognized in human serum. Though no progressive increase in serum I-2m concentration could be found along with HD, this study shows a significantly poor removal of I-2m in comparison to N-2m in patients receiving ongoing dialysis treatment, even with online HDF.

Despite the fact that the use of URR is not recommended by EBPG, it was the most commonly used indicator to measure urea removal, whereas eKt/V was only used by a small minority of centres. This study allowed us to point out the need to standardize definitions and procedures and to develop an effective plan for implementation of the guidelines.

The Wearable Artificial Kidney, Why and How: From Holy Grail to Reality - Victor Gura, Claudio Ronco, Andrew Davenport

Despite many attempts, to develop such a wearable artificial kidney, it is only recently, with the advent of microtechnologies, that it has been possible to construct a truly wearable device, which can accurately regulate ultrafiltration and achieve adequate solute clearances. One such device has recently completed successful human pilot studies, designed to test device reliability, safety, and efficacy.
