Blood Pressure Components and the Risk for End-Stage Renal Disease and Death in Chronic Kidney Disease - Rajiv Agarwal

In older patients with CKD, SBP predicts ESRD and a higher SBP and lower DBP predicts all-cause mortality. Lower BP of <110/70 mmHg is a marker of higher mortality in older individuals with advanced CKD.

Predictivity of survival according to different equations for estimating renal function in community-dwelling elderly subjects - Francesco Pizzarelli, Fulvio Lauretani, Stefania Bandinelli, Gwen B. Windham, Anna Maria Corsi, Sandra V. Giannelli, Luigi Ferrucci, and Jack M. Guralnik

In a South-European elderly population, the prevalence of CKD is high and varies widely according to the method adopted to estimate GFR. Researchers and clinicians who want to capture the prognostic information on mortality related to kidney function should use the Ccr or C-G formula and not MDRD equations. These results highlight the importance of strategies for early detection and clinical management of CKD in elderly subjects.

Use of a first-line urine protein-to-creatinine ratio strip test on random urines to rule out proteinuria in patients with chronic kidney disease - Mark Guy, Ronald Newall, Joanna Borzomato, Philip A. Kalra, and Christopher Price

Link to abstract.  Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation - 24:4:1189-1193 - April 2009
The strip test allows the physician to rule out significant proteinuria at the patient consultation on a random urine sample, obviating the need for specially collected samples, and with the added benefit of reducing the need for a lengthy and costly quantitative laboratory follow-up by 40–48%.

Framing Disparities Along the Continuum of Care from Chronic Kidney Disease to Transplantation: Barriers and Interventions - K. Ladin, J. R. Rodrigue, D. W. Hanto

Link to abstract.  American Journal of Transplantation - 9:4:669-674 - April 2009
Though gaps in current research leave us unable to identify which stages of the transplant pathway adversely affect most people, by identifying key risk factors across the continuum of care, this article highlights areas suited for targeted interventions and presents recommendations for improvement and future research.

Primum Non Nocere: Is Chronic Kidney Disease Staging Appropriate in Living Kidney Transplant Donors? - Y. Barri, T. Parker III, B Kaplan, R. Glassock

Link to abstract.  American Journal of Transplantation - 9:4:657-660 - April 2009
Although complete long-term studies are lacking, it appears that the 'labeling' of such donors as having CKD postdonation is common but not associated with a major effect on morbidity or mortality.
